Giotto

Giotto di Bondone was born in Florence around 1265. Giotto was a painter who was best known for his religious works. He studied under the famous painter Cimabue who saw Giotto sketch a sheep on a flat rock. Cimabue begged Giotto’s father to let Giotto become one of his students.

Giotto was the first painter to use natural landscape in the background of his pictures. He was also the first to show true feelings on the faces of the people he painted.

Giotto had a plain face and great wit and humor. When he died in 1337, he left six children.

Here are a couple of Giotto’s frescoes. When I’m in Padua, I plan to visit the Scrovegni Chapel and see both of these.
